Baymonte students have access to a comprehensive range of support services with designated staff for individual students (who struggle or excel) including IPI (Individualized Program of Instruction) for elementary grades, and a math resource class, STARI reading support class, GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) literature class, and an advanced math team for middle years and middle school students.
IPI (Individualized Program of Instruction)
Baymonte’s IPI program is designed to assist elementary students who struggle or may have learning differences in the areas of reading, writing and/or spelling. The IPI program was established at Baymonte over forty years ago and we have seen amazing progress with students, many of whom are in college or beyond.
The Barton Reading and Spelling System, which is an Orton-Gillingham based phonics program is a multi-sensory, explicit, and systematic way of teaching phonics. Students receive 1:1 or 1:2 teacher-to-student instruction at least twice weekly. Students are often pulled out during the classroom language arts time to ensure they won’t be missing classwork.
Our IPI instructors provide other subject area instruction as needed as well as a place for our students to take tests who may need more time, a quieter environment, or tests read aloud to them. We meet with parents and teachers to develop an accommodation plan for students to ensure success in the classroom and set up SST (Student Study Team) meetings if further collaboration is needed. We work closely with the Scotts Valley Unified School District to assist families with public school or outside testing if needed.
To ensure that first and second graders are progressing and maintaining grade level reading goals, we administer the Dibels (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Literacy Skills) to all first and second graders three times during the school year. We offer screening for students using the CTOPP and GORT assessments. The IPI program is subsidized by Baymonte, but we do charge families a minimal fee of $300/month to offset expenses.
Parent Testimonials:
“The IPI program that Baymonte provides and the one-on-one attention our son received from the instructors has helped him decode his spelling words and increased his ability to read considerably. The IPI program has also increased our son’s confidence in spelling and reading. The teachers do a great job of making it a fun and safe environment for learning.”
“For my son, IPI wasn’t only about the amazing one-on-one academic help he received, his instructor made it safe and comfortable for him to talk about anything he needed. He looked forward to the days he had IPI.”
“Two of my children went through Baymonte’s IPI program. There they learned tools to succeed in school, developed confidence and a love for school. They felt loved, encouraged and empowered in the program and went to high school and college where they received honors and multiple degrees. Thank you, Baymonte and IPI instructors!”
STARI Reading Support Class
Baymonte Christian School offers a class designed to assist middle years and middle school students who struggle or may have learning differences in the areas of reading, writing and/or spelling, or read two or more years below grade level.
By the time students reach middle grades, they are expected to read to learn instead of learn to read. But for the significant number of students who can’t decode or fluently read more complex text, this shift can be difficult. In addition, older students (grades 5-8) who need targeted, intensive reading instruction are adolescent thinkers. They do not find typical remedial materials engaging. Baymonte reading support instructors use the STARI (Strategic Adolescent Reading Intervention) program strategies to develop reading skills while also providing additional support and scaffolding for grade-level reading and writing assignments.
Using research-based practices and highly engaging texts, our instructors address gaps in fluency, decoding, reading stamina, and comprehension, aiming to move struggling students to higher levels of proficiency.
Our academic support instructors provide other subject area instruction as needed as well as a place for our students to take tests who may need more time, a quieter environment, or tests read aloud to them. We meet with parents and teachers to develop an accommodation plan for students to ensure success in the classroom and set up SST (Student Study Team) meetings if further collaboration is needed. The STARI reading support class is subsidized by Baymonte and does not cost our parents an additional fee.
