A City in the Classroom
Mayor Luke Finney cut the ribbon to officially open the town of
Burkesville last Monday. It was a bustling city made up of 18
shops and businesses run by the students of Mrs. Burke’s second grade
class. Several other classes were invited to shop and were given some
spending money. In a survey conducted by Mayor Finney, the first
grade classes said some of their favorite places to visit were the ice
cream shop, aquarium, toy store and nail salon. The citizens of
Burkesville were also given time to shop in their own town. Every day
they were responsible for paying rent, PG&E and an offering. The kids
had so much fun with this project and it was such a great learning
experience for them.
